Everything fine until we reached Zone 5. A Me-110 surprised us. The bugger hit us hard. We lost two engines and out mid upper gunner, Mason, was seriously wounded.
We dropped our load early as we began losing altitude. We turned around since it was an abort for us. Immediately we were hit again, losing our port wing flap.
By Zone 4 we leveled off under 10,000 ft. Flak was inaccurate but were jumped on by another 110. Paulsen suffered a light wound.
That was the last attack. We made it home safely.
Mason will be rotated home. Rupper will be our new mid upper gunner.
