Sir,
Sorry to report that Lt. Jack Andrews has died of his wounds sustained during the Royal Treatment's mission to Augsburg. We formed up with the other bombers without incident, and we were well into Germany before we encountered any enemy aircraft. We were hit by a surprise attack in zone 8, when a 110 got the jump on us from 6 low, injuring PJ and seriously injuring Lt. Andrews, as well as knocking out our auto-pilot and starboard wing flap. We tried to relieve Lt. Andrews of duty, but he refused to yield, saying the mission must be completed. Madison responded by shooting down the jerry bastage from the rear turret, registering our first kill of the war. We got jumped again a few minutes later, by another 110 sneaking up from 6 low, but this time the only damage was to the starboard aileron. We didn't get hit by any flak, but without our autopilot our bomb run was rubbish, and then we got hit by a 109, and the bastage holed our rafts. Madison shot him down, too -- he looks to be a very fine gunner. Or return flight was uneventful, as the fighter escort kept any further enemy aircraft away from us.
Respectfully submitted,
/s/ Lt. George Clinton, Navigator, Royal Treatment
