3rd/4th September, 1944
This second mission started off better than the last. We made it all the way to the target tonight without seeing any Boars. One Me110 worked us over with three attacks as we tried to line up on the target. His shots knocked out our navigation equipment as well as seriously wounding 2nd Lieut. Walters and disabling Huntington’s heated suit. This along with some miscellaneous holes was all the damage he did.
Flak was almost non-existent, allowing us to place nearly half our load (40%) on the mark. We descended to 3080 meters (10,000ft) to help prevent Huntington from acquiring frostbite.
Things were clear for about 150 kilometers after we dropped our load. This is when a Tame Boar surprised us, hitting out ship with seven shells, knocking out the #3 engine. On this fighters next attack he was shot to hell by Sellick’s great gunnery.
About 75 kilometers after this last attack the flak guns found us, killing 2nd Lieut. and chewing up the starboard rudder. It also froze our bomb bay doors closed.
We only saw one more Me110 approach us, but he made an early shot then peeled off with out further attempts.
Replacement:
2nd Lt. Malcolm Ainsworth (Bomb Aimer)
2nd Lt. Weylin O’Dougherty (Navigator)
