Moaning Myrtle, on her maiden flight, was shot down over Stuttgart on the night of 3/4 September 1943. Reports from the International Red Cross indicate the following crew members were taken into custody by the German Luftwaffe:
Bomb Aimer Bucky Denton
Pilot Dick Stanton
Engineer Nigel Green
Navigator John Smith
Radio operator Anthony Forster
Mid-upper gunner Neil Howard
Crew testimonies states that Tail gunner Bob Kingston was seriously wounded about two hours into the flight, and was unable to bail out when the craft went down, as his chute was not seen. It is presumed he went down with the aircraft, and perished upon impact.
