B for Bertie Mission 3 AAR : Berlin

Take off went fine. A night fighter made a pass at us about 120 miles from the target. The first I knew of it was when Sgt Alden yelled "Corkscrew skipper!" and I pushed Bertie hard over. Alden fired off a long burst that damaged the E/A and he lost us. As we approached berlin we could see the Target indicators burning nicely...and everything started to go bad. A 110 came up and shot us full of holes. I corkscrewed Bertie so hard I thought the wings would come off. We lost the 110 but searchlights picked us up. It was bloody awful! I was jinking all over the place when a single engine E/A came at us from the port side. Sgt Beresford shot him down with a long burst. About 15 seconds after that flak picked us up and for the second time Bertie got filled with holes. Smyth's oxy system exploded and caught fire and the plane filled with smoke. Smyth got the fire out. We took another hit that knocked the flaps out, and hit the starboard wing root twice. We dove down over the city and droped on target and continued to dive away. Another 110 walked hits down the fusalage as we crossed the suburbs of Berlin, wounding (Lwia) both Aldon and Beresford, and knocking out the heat to Beresfords station. I corkscrewed again and lost him but we were now at about 5,000 feet and jerry was having a good time shooting at us.We managed to avoid the flak all the way home. Landed Ok. (129 damage points)A whiskey and some real eggs for breakfast would do nicely.
