The morale is quite low for the crew after another aborted mission. We first encountered the enemy over the North Sea in Zone 5. A 110 came in in the darkness and knocked out our #3 engine (2nd time in a row). The pilot was able to feather right a way though. On his second pass we took hits damaging the port ammo for the tail guns and totaly wrecking the navigator's equipment. Fire was returned to no avail. The 3rd pass was from 12:00 high right into the guns of the mid upper and bomb aimer. Sgt. Erwin in the Mid upper claimed another with some fine shooting. Despite this victory the outlook was bleak and with a long way to go, to heavy flak in Berlin, nav gear out, and damage to the tail guns the order was regretfully given to retune to base (again) with no further incedent.
