Frankfurt, Germany Industry Mission Description:
23st/24nd September, 1944 We started off with not much opposition till about 20 minutes from the target (Zone 6). This is when we were surprised by a Tame Boar. Other than hitting our starboard elevator his hits were ineffectual. He came around for a second shot with the only effect being Peter, our tail gunner, jamming his guns.
We did see some flak over the target, so much for our Intel, yet none was close enough to bother us. Mark, our Bomb Aimer, put what looked to be 20% of our bomb load on target. Coming off the target another Me110 surprised our gunners and shot out our rubber rafts. This Luftwaffe pilot pressed his attack many times doing extensive damage to our port wing and elevator roots, as well as blowing a large hole in the Fire-Fly’s port fuel tank. How we didn’t just blow-up I will never know. Fuel now became an issue that haunted us the whole way home (6 Zones). Thank God we saw no more enemy aircraft for the rest of the trip. As we feathered out to land two engines choked to a stop, giving us heartache with the landing.
