Take off went ok&mash;about 120 miles from the target we got suprised by a night fighter and he hit us hard-wounded just about everybody on board, badly wounding Sgt Beresford in the upper turret. He blew out #3 engine. When he came around again Sgt Aldon shot him down. We elected to continue on to the target. About 60 miles away another NF attacked us, and shot out the starboard ailerons and flaps, blew out the heating system for Beresford's station and destroyed the mid upper turret completely. Aldon shot him down too, as he made a second pass. I dived down to ~ 9,000 feet to keep Beresford from freezing. As we approached Frankfurt the target indicators lit up the city pretty well&mash;we put our bombs into the main railway station and dove away from the city. About 25 minutes from the coast we ran into a flak belt that knocked out #2 engine and killed Beresford. Landed hard but ok. 185 dp's. Sgt Campion is Beresford's replacement.
