Fire Fly! Avro Lancaster [QU590]
Stuttgart, Germany Industry
Mission Description:
29th/30th September, 1943
Between Metz and Saarbrucken we were jumped by a Me110. He worked us over chewing us up on the first pass. This Kraut came back up from behind, pasting our wings hard. Both wings caught fire right off and all we could do was jump. The old girl exploded about 1500 meters below us. That enabled me to count six chutes plus my own. I saw Emmit and Haliway on the ground for about two hours. The partisans broke us into small mixed groups and worked to get us all out. I didn’t see any of the others after this. I pray they are still in the French hands.
