Alcyone Mission 9 AAR : Berlin

Out over the North Sea, Clarke spotted a Me-110 trying to come up behind us. A quick burst put an end to that.

The next 110 got by him, though, and shot up both our wings. That didn't stop me throwing Alcyone around the sky. Dahlgren, in the nose turret, took a shot as it passed in front of us, and sent it down in flames.

We were surprised by another 110 after we'd crossed into Germany. He didn't hit us, and Dahlgren eventually drove him off.

Berlin was covered in clouds. I don't know how it happened, but a searchlight found a chink and lit us up for the flak batteries. The only flak we saw on the whole trip killed Chamberlain in his mid-upper turret. A single-engined fighter flashed past, and Dahlgren dropped our load in only the most general neighborhood of the target indicators.

It was a long and quiet trip home with Chamberlain on our minds.
