A couple of bad passes by 110's until we got to Berlin proper. They pulled out all the stops then. 110's and 109's as well as searchlights and flak. Thats were Rumbold, the tail gunner, got hit. Never thought we'd get to him and render aid and re-man the tail guns. We still put the bombs on the markers. Once away we thought we were home free. Damn night fighters out of Holland, he was rather good about his business. Wrecked the tail turret and #4 engine. Couldn't get the prop to feather. Glad we didn't have to fly real far in that condition. Damage to the tail plane control surfaces made the landing rather sticky, but, the crew chief thinks she be up and ready for next mission, he was a little more concerned for the 20 hits we took. Rumbold will be fine I believe, but, his flying days are over.
