We joined the bomber stream ok. About 30 miles MW of Osnabruck the night fighters got onto the us. We saw a Lanc go down about a mile ahead of us. Shortly after that a 110 came curving down from the portside rear — Sgt Wallingford in the Mid Upper spotted him and I turned as sharp as I could to port — he came down behind us almost level and Aldon shot him down. About 50 east of Magdeburg Aldon yelled Corkscrew Port — NOW Skipper
I was too late — a 110 hit us several times — once in the starboard wing root. We began violent evasive maneuvers — we lost him after about 30 minutes. We came up over the target and it was nicely lit up. Jeeves picked out the Spree river just as the searchlights and the flak from those big bunkers in the center of Berlin picked us up. An Me109 came down on us from behind — the lights picked him up too — he flew right into Wallingford's tracers and he went straight down. I hope he crashed into the the Chancellery! Then several things happened at once — Flak hit the nose turet and the #4 engine, destroying both and wounding Jeeves. He stayed at his post and dropped on target. As soon as he gave me Bombs Gone
we banked as hard we could to Port — keeping the dead engine up — and got out of there. One the way everyone's nerves were on edge — again near OsnaBruck we spotted a 110 and Aldon got in the first shots — he went down with his starboard engine on fire. Near the coast we picked up Dinah Shore on the radio singing Coming in on a wing a prayer
— she led us home and we came in ok, despite the rain.
