O Orange II took off and joined up with the bomber stream heading for Berlin. Shortly after crossing the Dutch coast we were jumped by an ME110 which scored a number of hit causing significant damage to the aircraft and jamming the rear turret. Violent corkscrewing lost the fighter in the dark.
Shortly after the turning point for the target we were attacked by another ME110 which again scored hits throughout the aircraft knocking out the mid-uppers oxygen and causing a small fire which was put out with an extinguisher. With the lost of the oxygen we had to drop out off the bomber stream and descend to 10000 feet. The only good thing was Tiny Lund was able to free the rear turret.
Shortly after starting the runup to the target we were hit by another ME110. Flight deck heat was knocked out and No 1 engine developed a leak in its oil tank. We were takinga beating but pressed on hoping for the best over the target. Unfortunately we were hit by flak and Tiny Lund in the rear turret was killed. Bomb run was off target. We were running scared for home and were attacked once more taking minor damage. We finally landed safely but O Orange II was well holed and may not be ready for the next mission. A replacement will report.
