S For Sugar Mission 10 AAR : Berlin

Mission Report: S-Sugar

A miserable night for the crew with the loss of many of our friends in the squadron including Bernie Bateman, our flight engineer, numerous repairs required to the old girl, despite this however our best bombing run to date.

We thought that we had Jerry had the night off until a Me-110 surprised us just short of Berlin and again on the final run into the city. The bus took numerous hits and Bernie copped it during the second attack. However we were now coming up to the target with good weather and light flak as per the Int sections guesstimate, which enabled us to focus on the job in hand, and we put down an estimated 75% of our bombs right on target!

We were bounced once more on the return, the old girl battled on though and we were all relieved to see the Drem lights marking the runway threshold back at base.
