O Orange II returned from the mission to Berlin with dead crew on board. On the outward leg we were hit from below by an ME110 that scored hits throughout the AC. Tailgunner Link was wounded and Bomb Aimer Simpson was killed in the attack.
Tailgunner Link managed to shoot down the ME110 that attacked and it was observed to crash in a ball of fire. Shortly after this attack another ME100 attacked from behind and also scored hits through out the AC. Despite his wounds tailgunner Link also shot down this attacked which was observed to explode in a ball of fire before it hit the ground. Flight Engineer Turek moved into the nose of the AC to take over bomb aiming duties moving the body of Simpson to the rear of the nose section. Unfortunately the bomb run was not the best and the bombs fell well clear of the TIs. We were jumped by another ME110 after leaving the target which scored many hits including one that struck Pilot Wilson in the head killing him instantly. Flight Enginer Turek moved Wilson's body and took over flying of O Orange II.
Thankfully we were not bothered for the rest of the trip home. I guess the Jerries figured we had had enough. Despite limited pilot training Turek landed safely. Turek will be awarded a DFM for his bravery and actions on this mission.
