The sky seems especially dark tonight as we head out over the Reich. This is our second mission so we are a little more relaxed now. As we approach Germany itself we finally are attacked by a Me-110. Neither side gets any hits & we travel on into the night. As we approach the target area a 110 opens up, but misses, the tail gunner gets a bead on him and lets him have it. The 110 bursts into flames & goes down to earth! We are over the target & another 110 strikes. Hitting us this time! The control cables are hit & the rudder is also hit! The 110 misses any further attacks. A ME-109 attacks out of nowhere & hits the Tail section. the autopilot mech. is hit Which could affect the bomb aim.
The 109 comes in again, but the tail gunner drives him off. The searchlights are on us and luckily we are not hit by flak. We still manage to drop thirty percent on target! Now to head for home! A 110 attacks takes a couple of hits & swings around for another pass. This time the tail gunner gets him good, damaging the plane, forcing him to break off. We are away from Brunswick now on the way back another 110 attacks, hitting the port landing gear! We cannot hit this one! Another pass manages to hit the tail guns rendering them inoperable! This is our most important weapon! We slip away into the darkness and one more 110 finds us before we are home free. another hit to the tail section, hitting the tail guns again! We survive further attacks & the 110 finally breaks off! We approach the landing in crash positions because of the Damaged landing gear, but everything turned out ok. Two missions down, & no one was hurt this time.
