Quiet flight as we crossed the coast. Short of the target area we were picked up by a ME-110. It surprised us as he came in causing S/F damage to the oil tank in the port wing and some damage to the starboard wing. I watched as Flt Mann our bomb aimer had a good bead on him, his tracers hitting Jerry solid in both engines. He went down in flames. As we pushed on another ME-110 comes in on us but overshoots, as he made his second pass I trained my turret guns on him and let him have it good. Another flammer! Over the target we traded shots with another ME-110 with no hits. We got in and out with bombs on target for 30%. But as the Skipper made the turn for home we got raked good with numerous S/F damage through the ship, losing the rafts and damage to the starboard elvator. Sgt Loud our Flt Eng was S/W during this last pass. Flt Lt Johnson came back and gave the Sgt first aid on the flight home. Just before the coast the last ME-110 came in with Sgt Jackson causing him some damage, nough to break off his attack. Nothing further as we saw home sweet home and the skipper got us on the ground. Sgt Loud will make but its a ground posting for him.
