PM005: PO A. Dilbert reporting. We were looking forward to our first mission, a chance to do to Jerry what he had been doing to us the last few years. Unfortunately, all did not go according to plan. We had heard Holland was a hornet's nest of 110s, and so it proved to be. East of Amsterdam, a 110 chewed us up good, including knocking out the #2 engine. I wanted to make a good first impression with the rest of the group, so I elected to stay on course. We brushed off another 110 near Enschede. North of Osnabruck, another 110 got into us, and killed our bomb aimer, B. Egbert. With PM005 hard to maneuver, and no one skilled enough to drop the bombs on target, I elected to turn for home. The rest of the trip was uneventful. Crew Chief Report: Replace starboard wing flap, starboard wing spar and port elevator. Order new rafts. Overhaul #2 engine. Patch various holes.
