We took off and headed for the assembly point. The outward trip was uneventful until just after the turning point heading for the target. An ME110 got behind us and opened fire just as Link our tail gunner spotted it. We took a few minor hits in the rear of the A/C. Link poured fire into the port wing of the ME110 which caught fire. The enemy A/C dove away and was observed to crash in several pieces. On the runup to the target Link spotted another ME110 and nailed it in the starboard engine causing flames and sparks to trail. The enemy A/C broke away and soon after there was a large explosion as the fuel tank went up.
Over the target the runup was looking good until we took a flak hit in the tail just as the bombs were being released. The plane skidded off course and the bombs were dropped off the TIs.
Trip home was quiet and we landed safely.
