Seemed as if we were going to have a quiet night, but it all when into the dustbin at the target. A 110 got the drop on us first. Corkscrewed around to throw his aim off and Rydell got him. But, all the action got the attention of a search light crew. Immediately got attacked by a Wild Boar. Hit us every pass until Jones says he got him, but, by then the flak was all around, who knows who or what hit the Hun. With all the action and the blinding light, Jones could not see the markers or much else. I ordered the load dropped and we turned for home. A 110 then found us and almost did us in. He wrecked the oxygen supply system in the Pilot compartment and started a vicious fire. Hyte had to use two extinguishers to put it out before it forced us to bail. Somewhere over the target, Robert was killed back in the rear turret, thats why the Hun got so close and really peppered us.
We then noticed that the oil pressure on #4 was off. Slowly dropping, we finally shut down the engine as we left zone 7. Zone 6 another 110 that tagged us, Rydell got him to break off from the rear turret. Hit by more flak as we crossed the Dutch coast. We were ever so glad to make it back to the aerodrome. (181 pts)
