This time we are heading out to Frankfurt. We take off & start the long trek into the Fatherland. It is very dark as we travel into the darkness. We approach the Rhineland and a ME-110 finds us and attacks! We get a piece of him and he manages to hit us also. The Bomb bay takes a hit & thank God none of the bombs were hit! We are over the target & manage to avoid any fire from attacking planes and drop twenty percent on target! We turn away and are hit hard by a 110! The Bomb bay is hit again. Another attack and the Rubber rafts are shredded! The 110 rear gun hits us and the Starboard wing root is hit! He comes around again and hits us hard! The Pilot Comp. is hit and the Pilot & Navigator are wounded! Both lightly wounded. We manage to escape and fly into the darkness. A 110 again hits us and the rubber rafts are really destroyed now. We break free and are practically home free. A 110 comes out of the night and unleashes a volley against us! Disaster! The Bomb aimer is hit and seriously wounded! Worse yet the Mid-Upper Gunner is hit also & is killed! The crew is stunned … We fly on and manage to land with little difficulty. The Bomb Aimer will recover to fly with us again.
