As we crossed the coast DJ our tail gunner spotted an ME-110 sneaking up on our tail. Both of them missed and the skipper threw Jersey into a hard turn to port. I spotted the ME-110 coming around 9 level and I missed but he did cause some S/F damage to both wings.
As we continued on we were jumped by another ME-110 that knew what he was about and raked us pretty good causing S/F to the bomb bay and tail. During this attack we also lost Ian Johnson, our navigator and DJ called out over the intercom that he was lightly wounded but would stick with his guns. On this bloke's next pass Flt Officer Mann caused enough damage to cause Jerry to break off his attack.
Over the target we didn't see much in the way of enemy fighters but the flak did score some hits and we took some S/F damage to the waist on our Flt Eng Flt Sgt Loud was lightly wounded. Mann manage to ignore all of this and put 30% on target. Skipper threw us in a high hard turn when he heard, Bombs Gone!
As we left the target area were jumped by another ME-110 and we ended up with a hit to the S/W root, S/F damage to the PW and my guns were knocked out. The turret was jammed solid so I made my way back to the tail to check on DJ. Close to the coast we got hit again by another ME-110 which knocked out our #3 engine and S/F damage to the SW and we lost the rafts. On the second past there was S/F to the tail and a brief fire in the PC, which the skipper handled pretty well. Once the fire was out, he brought Jersey down even lower as we crossed the coast and over the channel. I'm sure we gave some of those Frenchies some courage with the roar of our engines over head. We landed ok, but Chiefy is fit to be tied with all the damage. After debrief, Sgt DJ and Flt Sgt Loud went over to the hospital to get looked at. As we sat back in the mess hall we met our new navigator, F/O Matt Fletcher.
