DAMAGED Starboard Rudder
Between enemy fighter attacks and flak O Orange II was badly damaged and managed to limp home. Amazingly none of the crew were wounded. Due to the damage to the flight controls Pilot Sgt Charles Morgan assisted by Flight Engineer Duncan Watt were only able to set heading through use of the damaged starboard rudder and by adjusting engine speeds. They managed to get O Orange II on the proper heading for the runway many miles out and made an emergency landing at one of the air bases near the Channel coast. Without wing flaps Morgan gradually cut back on speed while maintaining heading and set his AC down and let it run out on the runway.
For his actions in bringing a badly damaged aircraft home Sgt Charles Morgan is awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal.
For his actions in bringing a badly damaged aircraft home Sgt Duncan Watt is awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal.
