Mission Description:
Berlin, Germany — Government
21st/22nd December 1943
First enemy activity we saw was 200 kilometers before the target. That’s when a Me110 surprised us but he did little damage to our ship. When we approached to the target we were surprised twice more. The first Me110 missed us and just flew off. The second Me110 tore us up a bit, damaging our tail and wing roots and disabling our bomb bay doors. This was irritating as we still had our bombs on board. Meaning we were taking them home. This fighter also wounded McNair. Since we were at the IP when this all happened we came under attack by the flak batteries. We took more damage from these guns too. Damaging our port wing root and wounding McNair for a second time. As we turned to go home we were attacked by a Me109 that only added to the hole count in the plane. It was the last Me110, about 35 kilometers later that seriously wounded Cromwell who died later from his wounds.
As I said that was the last fighter attack and we were able to return with out further issue. Landing went fine and we didn’t blow-up from the bombs onboard.
