PM008 Mission 29 AAR : Frankfurt

PM008: PO Galbraith, reporting. Smooth sailing until about 30 miles southeast of Aachen, when we were surprised by a 110 from the rear. Shot us up pretty good. Both Jenkins, our bomb aimer, and Leonard, or rear gunner, were hit. Despite his wounds, Leonard stayed at his station, destroying the enemy fighter. Earnshaw checked on Jenkins wounds, reporting that he was seriously wounded and might make it if we returned immediately to base. I briefly considered continuing, but as Jenkins was the bomb aimer, there would be little point chancing his life for absolutely no hope of accurately bombing the target. So, I turned for home. Somewhere over Holland we were attacked by another 110, which Leonard also shot down for his eighth kill. I recommend that Leonard be mentioned in despatches. Unfortunately, Jenkins later died in hospital. (97 Peckham Points)
