Hit by tame boar in zone 4. Shot out mid-upper turret while wounding Long severely, resulting in his death soon after. Anderson potted that fellow on his next pass and we watched him explode. Hit again in zone 7. This bugger destroyed our tail turret. Allen reported that he was okay, however and continued to report activity to me. Over target, we encountered another 110, but he must have been a novice pilot as three passes were all misses. Bomb run on the spot with estimated 30% damage. Attacked again in zone 5 on return trip with very slight damage reported.
Landed safely without incident.
Anderson credited with fifth kill giving him "ace" status.
Unfortunate about Long being killed on his first mission. At least the rest of the crew will not take it so hard. Edwin Berger named as replacement mid-upper gunner.
