We are heading to Schwienfurt tonight. the morale is high. We have a smooth ride most of the way. As we approach the target area a ME-110 comes from behind. the Tail gunner gets a hit on him and as he passes beneath us the front gunner gets the kill, destroying the 110! We are almost ready to bomb the target & another 110 hits us and the control cables are hit! He comes around from behind and the Tail gunner gets the kill!
Over the target yet another 110 hits us and we take a hit to the port wing flap, no damage though. We are clear and drop Forty Percent on target! We turn for home now brimming with confidence. We are away from the target & one last 110 finds us in the darkness. On a verticle cimb we take a couple of hits! The Bomb bay doors are hit! No damage! The flight Engineers oxygen supply is hit! Also the Port Wing Aileron is hit, but not seriously damaged! On his last approach The Tail Gunner manages to get a damaging shot and the 110 limps away! We drop down in elevation for the flight engineer., But encounter no more fighter resistance. We land safely without incident.
