All was quiet until we entered Germany. A Me110 jumped us, but SGT Biele shot it down before it did any harm.
Over the target, we were hit by flak, rendering our landing gear inoperable. A Me109 jumped us, shooting out our #1 engine, and we feathered the prop. When the 109 returned for a second bout, 2LT Izzi hit him and drove him off.
Bomb run was on target, resulting in 30% of our load hitting.
After turning for our run home, a Me110 jumped us and hammered us all down the fuselage. The first hit killed 2LT Kilmartin and 2LT Izzi took command of the a/c. Mid-upper gunner SGT Maxcy was also hit in that attack, but sustained a light wound and returned to his guns. When the 110 returned for another round, he shout out our starboard aileron and knocked Maxcy's heater out. Rear Gunner SGT Biele damaged the 110 as it passed behind us, and it broke off.
A/C descended to 10,000 feet to prevent Maxcy from getting frostbite. At that time, we were hit by flak, rendering the tail turret inoperable.
We were jumped again over Belgium by another 110, which damaged our starboard wing a bit before being driven off by 2LT Hakanson.
2LT Izzi landed the plane safely. Maxcy will recover from wounds.
