Mission 39 (Our first mission)
Outbound
Attacked over Eindhoven by a Me-110 which shot us up some and knocked out the starboard ammo box. Also he hit the bomb bay but only superficial damage. No more Krauts until over the target when a Tame Boar attacked; he caused little damage.
Over Target
We were coned and attacked by a Wild Boar which knocked out number three engine (started a fire but it was extinguished). Our nose gunner put some rounds into the 109 and he had to give up the fight (FBOA). We scored 20% on the bombing. Right after we were attacked by a Me-110 who hit the tail gunner, Sgt. Danny Wright, who died immediately. Following passes hit the starboard aileron, bomb bay, and port ammo box but with no effect.
Return
Attacked again near the Belgian coast but no serious damage except to the wing roots. We landed without any problems.
