We took damage almost every step of the way. Even though we were quit damaged and had to drop to 10,000 feet prior to the target we manage to hit the target with around 30% of our load.
Within the site of the safety of our airspace we were attacked by one last Me110, he raked us real good killing SSgt. Harshmen and seriously wounding FO Black. As the aircraft nosed for earth I rushed for the controls. This was the last enemy attack we encountered. With the amount of damage, especially with the starboard landing gear out, my landing was not pretty but I didn’t flip the aircraft. The plane is lost and FO Black died in hospital two hours later.
