We encountered Nazi nightfighters in almost every zone on our flight to Berlin. I am so pleased to report to you the fabulous achievement of Cpl Tomaz Volka, our rear turret gunner. Cpl. Volka spotted seven Nazi nightfighters comming up on us, and amazingly, shot down five of them! I am also pleased to report that Cpl. Jock MacDoniel, our upper turret gunner, shot down two Nazi nightfighters.
Our aircraft did sustain some damage in these attacks; we lost engine number 3 and our oxygen supply. Even after being hit with enemy spotlight and being attacked by enemy Me109 nightfighter and losing one engine, we did bomb target in Berlin, hitting with estimated 40% of our bombs.
We lost oxygen on flight home and dropped down to 2500 meters altitude.
I recommend Cpl. Volka be promoted to Sgt. for his amazing night against Nazi Germans.
