Mission 42
Berlin Industry
Outbound
Zone 6 we were attacked by a Me-110 but he never had a chance to fire as Cedric spotted him and sent him home trailing smoke. (Me-110 FBOA - Sgt. Cedric Shaw) The next Jerry was more successful and put a numbers of hits on us: the starboard rudder controls and starboard inboard fuel tank which self-sealed okay. Cedric sent him off with his port engine ablaze. (Me-110 FBOA - Sgt. Cedric Shaw). The next night fighter, a 110, came in unseen and hit us several times but the only real damage was he knocked out the radio. 'Worthy' drove it off with a number of holes in the fuselage (Me-110 FBOA - Sgt. Wm. Worthington).
Over target
Before the bomb run mixed it up with a Me-110 which knocked out the navigation equipment, holed the outer starboard fuel tank (self-sealed), and put some holes in the #4 engine cowling. Very lucky over the target: no Flak; not caught in the searchlights, and no Wild Boars. Considering that, we should have done better on the bomb run but we were off target. Cedric spotted a Me-110 as we were leaving the Berlin area and before the Kraut fired Cedric ended his flying career with some shots into the engine. (Me-110 Destroyed - Sgt. Cedric Shaw).
Return
Zone 7. Didn't see the Me-110 coming in: he put a cannon round into our port wing, but before he could do any more damage Billy drove him off (Me-110 FBOA - Sgt. Wm. Milan). The remainder of the flight was quiet, but long because we didn't have navigational equipment. Landing was a little sticky because of a cross wind and the damage to the rudder controls.
