Nice weather as we head out to Berlin. No enemy fighters spot us until we aproach the target. The first fighter a ME-110 finds us and Our starboard ammo box is hit! Then the port wing root is hit. The tail gunner gets a couple of hits and tha 110 comes in one more time. A verticle climb and we take many hits! The #1 engine is hit, No damage though! The St. wing aileron is hit and rendered inop! We finally are clear of the fighter and are over the target.
With the poor weather we are undetected & drop our bombs, thirty percent on target! We turn away and are intercepted by another 110. The tailgunner gets a bead and damages the 110! We get clear and are on the way home. Another 110 finds us and hits us a couple of times! The control cables are hit! The bomb bay doors are hit also and are now useless. We slip away in the bad weather. Another 110 finds us and we exchange fire. The st. wing flap is hit rendering it inop. The control cables are again hit! We struggle for control and get away. One more 110 finds us and we are hit again on the #2 engine! luckily no damage. We exchange fire and get away again. We are pretty banged up and manage to fly home and land safely back at the base.
