We'd just reached the German border when a Me-110 surprised us. It took out the heat to the flight deck, jammed the rear turret, and smashed the bomb door mechanism. There was no point in continuing, so I brought us down low and turned for home. We did catch some flak in the port wing over the Netherlands, but nothing serious.
This was our fourth operation, and we've only made it to the target once.
