PM013 Mission 47 AAR : Ludwigshaven

PM013, PO A. Jaye reporting. We were on the far side of Belgium, outbound, when we got surprised by a 110. Manley, the WTO, got hit pretty bad before Osgood, the rear gunner, shot it down. Got surprised again a few minutes later, as we crossed into Germany, but the Jerry missed us, and Osgood shot him down as well. Bomb run went without incident, Oliver putting 20% on target. Crossing back over the Belgian border was problematic. 110 in a vertical climb messed up the #2 engine, and started an oxygen fire in the nose. We were able to deal with both situations before he came around for second pass, whereupon Nobsworth, the mid-upper gunner, shot him down. Due to the lack of oxygen in the nose, I dropped to 10,000 feet. We managed to dodge flak over central Belgium, but got surprised by another 110. It made three passes, with the first by far the worst, as Munson was killed outright, the #2 fuel tank began leaking and the rear turret was rendered inoperable. We got back to base, then fired off the emergency flares. On approach, the starboard landing gear would not come down. Given the wounded on board, I thought it best to get them to hospital as quick as possible, deciding to land on one set of wheels, rather than go around for another pass in the hope we could manually crank the other down. Landing was without incident. Our flight crew will have quite a bit of work to do if PM013 is to be ready in two nights time. Manley will spend the rest of the war working in administration.
