Crossed the coast and right away we were worked over by a real pro. His first attack caused S/F damage to the Bomb Bay, Starboard Rudder took a hit, S/F damage to the Tail and we lost the PW Aileron. His second pass got a hit on the Port Rudder and we lost the SW Aileron. He was greedy for another pass, but our mid-upper knocked out his port engine with a good burst and we watched him dive away badly smoking. That wasn't the end though as his pals were in the area and as we moved closer to the target we were jumped again, this attack caused S/F damage to the PW and a hit to the PW root.
Finally over the target! Picked up by a ME-110 which caused S/F damage to the tail and damage to the Starboard Rudder. For some reason unknown he bugger off and left us alone. The Flak came in close but we were unhurt. We put 20% on target and I made the turn for home.
The landing was a bit dicey, with both ailerons out and the rudders shot to bits. Managed to get her down with a couple of bounces. Covered in sweat and body tired all over I got out of the cockpit and joined the lads looking up at our shot up tail section. One remarked, "you're lucky tonight mate!" as we noticed no damage to the tail turret. "Aye, I think we should call you "Lucky" from now on." "what do you think Skipper?" With a tired smile I told the chaps we could use all the luck we could get after this one. "Ride's here sir!" our radio op called out. We all made our way to the truck and slowly piled in. Thoughts of food and some sleep was on everyones mind. "Alright old son let's go" I said to the driver as the lads settled down in back.
