Tykhe Mission 57 AAR : Berlin

"Damn, Irwin, of course I remember it. I remember it like it was yesterday. Sixty-five years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday. Just because I don't talk about it doesn't mean I don't remember … but you were there, Irwin, I can talk to you. And Patrick … but Pat died, what was it? '65, '66? Too soon. Too soon for the others, too. I knew I should have turned back when Greg's heat was shot out. Yes, we hadn't reached the continent yet, but we'd gone far enough — it still would have counted toward our ops. And then I had another chance when Rod was hit. But what did I do? Had Greg drag him out of his turret and take over watching our tail. Yes, Irwin, I know I was just a kid, then. We were all just kids, and if you looked inside one of those Me-110's, you'd have found kids there, too. Did you ever go to one one those reunions, you know, where you meet with some German pilots, and all that? I got an invitation once. But its only for the survivors — Greg and Rod and John and Jake weren't going, so I didn't go. I couldn't go.

"It took Jake getting hit for me to turn us around … but still, that was only because I figured we'd never find Berlin without him. And then John went for a Burton at the same time the wing was set on fire. I held it level as long as I could … had to leave Jake and Rod behind, nothing to be done for them. But what happened to Greg? Did he jump? He should have jumped. I don't know. No one knows.

"… Thanks for coming by, Irwin. Don't let it be so long 'til the next time."
