"THUNDER BAY II"
Mission 60 — 21/22 April, 1944
Berlin — Industry
Outbound. We were over the Netherlands when we were first attacked by a Me-110. He was spotted as he came up from behind by the rear gunner, Sgt. Langley, who put enough rounds into him to prevent him from making a second pass. His one attack resulted in a hit on our starboard wing (root). (Me-110 FBOA — Sgt. Morris Langley). East of Brunswick another Me-110 attacked and again he was spotted before his first attack and Langley tore off parts of his wing, enough that the initial attack was all he made. Though putting a number rounds into Thunder Bay, the only damage was knocking out the starboard aileron. (Me-110 FBOA — Sgt. Morris Langley). Just before the bomb run a 110 did some real damage with another hit on the starboard wing (root), destroyed the raft, and knocked out No. 4 engine which I was able to feather. None of our gunners claimed hits.
Bomb run. No E/A, no searchlight, and no flak hits. Sgt. Hill dropped on target and estimates 30% hit.
Return. There were no E/A attacks on our run back to England.
Landing. Even though on three engines and lacking the starboard aileron we put down easily.
