Ain't No Lady Mission 66 AAR : Bourg Léopold

Ain't No Lady
Mission 66 — 16/17 May, 1944
Bourg Léopold — Troop Encampement

No E/A until we were over the target and a search light zeroed in followed by a very aggressive Me-109 which put some rounds through the pilot compartment; and "Wireless", the W/O operator, took some shrapnel in his ankle. On his second pass the Kraut again peppered the pilot compartment and Sgt. Roger Nesmith, our flight engineer was killed instantly. He knocked out the outer port fuel tank which put finished to the engine and tore away part of the wing root.

We were off target and hit nothing.

The only other Kraut was a 110 which attacked as we left the continent. Both mid-upper and our new tail gunner, Delaney says his attacks were halfhearted like he didn"t want to close. Except for what was probably a very lucky shot into the port wing root, he did no substantial damage.
