Opposition outbound: Met a ME-110 very near the target area. Came in unseen and his first pass he knocked out No. 1 engine and the starboard elevator. On his second, our bomb aimer winged him enough that he missed. The third pass he did no damage to the aircraft but killed Sgt. George Whipple, tail gunner.
Weather over target: very poor
Bomb run: We managed to avoid the searchlights; flak was minor and no hits. The bomb run was on, estimated 30% on target
Opposition homeward: None
Landing: Okay in spite of not having No. 1 engine and starboard elevator.
