Disaster! We didn't even make it to the target before hun turned the forward part of the fuselage into a collander. Pilot and Flight engineer both killed in te first pass and the forward turret jammed, oxygen bottles shot up and the canopy blown to fragments.
Once Jerry had got bored with shooting us up we managed to get turned round and headed for home but with no realistic hope of getting our new kite down in one piece those of us left bailed out over Norfolk.
Carswell jumped last but his chute failed. Poor sod!
