Chelsea Rose Mission 80 AAR : Dijon

Another long flight over the land of the Franks! Luftwaffe busy tonight; we were jumped by five of their nightfighters, all Bf110 variety. We were hit numerous time, but with exception of losing engine #2 and radio being shot out, no noticable damage was inflicted. Our defensive fire is believed to have hit several jerrys, but none were seen to break off their attack on us or plummet to earth in flames.

Sgt. Fagan, our navigator, found the target, there was some flak but nothing near us. We caught a break in the clouds and Bomb aimer Sgt. O'Leary hit target; estimate 30% on target! Then back into the clouds for a fairly smooth flight home, except for one more encounter with Jerry.

Landed without incident. Chief mechanic reports ten holes in Chelsea Rose, the rubber raft destroyed, damage to port wing root and a self-sealed hole in Starboard wing inboard petrol tank. He says engine will be replaced and damages repaired in time for next scheduled mission.

Now, off to the pub to buy Sgt. O'Leary a pint to celebrate his first on-target mission!

Respectfully Submitted,
Walter Jones, F.O. RAF-Bomber Command
Pilot — Chelsea Rose.
