A late take off seemed to mean Jerry had gone home to stock up on petrol and bullets — we didn't meet any opposition until zone 7. A Me110 had a go at us but some smart evasive action brought him into the range of the mid-upper who let him have it.
In the target zone we caught another — damaged him, but not before he'd put a round or four into the pilot compartment and nose — Pilot and Flight eng wounded by splinters and a mess made of the bomb sight and windscreen. — So God knows where the bomb load went.
Then a quiet but bloody cold trip home until we got to the channel — a sneaky Jerry put shells into the undercart, ammo tracks and tail surfaces by way of farewell before losing interest.
The landing was a bit bumpy — and we ran off into the grass but I'm told we didn't do any permanent damage. Edna will be ready to go in a day or two.
