With a new aircraft after O Orange XIII was written off after virtually being destroyed in the last two missions, the last one in which we lost our rear gunner, we took off for the target. Shortly after crossing the French coast we were attacked by a ME110. We took a total of 12 hits during a couple of passes hits which holed the rafts in the starboard wing and hit the starboard wing root as well as knocking out the oxygen to the MU gunner and jammed the tail turret. A follow up pass holed in inboard port wing fuel tank causing a stream of fuel which fortunately did not catch fire. The MU gunner was badly wounded and tend to by the wireless op. With fuel critical we had to turn back and jettisoned our bombs over the Channel. We landed safely and the MU gunner was taken to the base infirmary and recovered
