Going back to Hamburg, finish the job this time, morale is high. We are out over the North Sea going on this long trek. We hit the coast & are immed. hit by a 110. we take hits across the body. nothing serious. on his next pass the tailgunner gets a bead on him, & the night fighter explodes!
We are approaching the target & are jumped yet again! another 110 hits us hard! The Navigator is hit and seriously wounded! Our plane is chewed up a bit & he finally leaves. over the target we are detected! a 109 rakes us! the crew is getting nervous, we are taking plenty of hits! the nose gunner gets him though! We drop our ordinance & get the hell out of this maelstorm!
We finally evade the searchlight & are in the darkness again! glad to be away from that chaos! we are on our way back. another 110 finds us and hits us again, We take a few more hits! the #1 engine is gone! the upper gunner trades with him! the 110 trails smoke, & the upper gunner is lightly wounded. we break free and are back over the North Sea. a long flight home, in which our Navigator doesn't make it … We finally limp to the Air Base, & manage to touchdown without difficulty. A costly Mission.
