Somewhere towards the target we were hit hard by an unseen fighter — the pilot was badly wounded. By the time the F/E regained control the fighter had disappeared and it was decided to return home. In the vicinity of the airfield the other five crew members baled out safely, leaving the F/E to try to land the aircraft. Unfortunately neither he nor the pilot survived the subsequent crash.
