PM017, pilot officer A. Mankiewicz reporting. As we were approaching the Dutch coast, we successfully avoided a Me-110 in a vertical climb. Just outside the target zone, we were surprised by another Me-110. I had instructed the lads to use spray fire, but our new tail gunner missed anyway, and we took several hits. Our WTO, E. Quarry was wounded but able to carry on. Flak was heavy. We were jostled once, but to no effect. In the process of dodging an Me-109 inside the flag ring, we completely missed the target. Exitting the target area, we drove off another Me-110. So far, a decent bedding in for the new bird. Re-approaching the Dutch coast is where Jerry got his boot in. He must have thought we heading out, rather than home, as he worked over the wings and bomb bay. After rear gunner G. Worley drove him off, I dropped altitude. No further encounters. On final approach, discovered port landing gear was would not deploy. Made a smooth landing anyway. I think I might rather more enjoy ferrying grannies about after the war. Major end items that need to be replaced are port landing gear, port wing spar, starboard wing spar (x2), flight deck window, and rear gunner oxygen system. (18 hits, 151 Peckham Points damage).
