Nightmare
Operation: Mission 100 Brunswick — Industry
Date: 16/17, Sept. 1944
Crew: Pilot: F/L Chris Bevin; Bomb aimer Sgt. Ernie Whitbread; Navigator Sgt. Bob Starling; Flt. Eng. Sgt. 'Rip' Higgins; W/O Sgt. Tom Clarion; Mid-upper Sgt. Neal Harding; Tail gunner Sgt. Thomas Boland
Opposition outbound: Over the Channel we were attacked by an Me-110: his first pass did no damage and on his second Sgt. Whitbread (nose gunner) blew away part of a wing and he left us after doing no damage. Nearing the target area another 110 attacked; put some rounds into the bomb bay which fortunately hit no bombs, hit the port wing root, but destroyed the tail gunner's heat.
Over the target: No opposition over the target except there was flak which missed us. (Because of the tail gunner I dropped down after bombing to get us out of the extreme cold).
On target: 40%
Opposition homeward: At about the same point we were attacked outbound another 110 attacked but was spotted coming in and Sgt. Whitbread got his second FBOA for the night.
Landing: Okay
Crew casualties: None
Comments: None
