PM017, pilot officer A. Mankiewicz reporting. Snuck past all the fighters on the run in, but not the flak. We were jostled by three bursts, causing the port inboard petrol tank to spring a heavy leak. A Wild Boar tried to take advantage of our disorientation, but I managed to shake him off. Well done to bomb aimer B. Upton for putting 30% on target under difficult circumstances. After turning for home, had the lads check in. Did not hear from rear gunner G. Worley. Sent the navigator, C. Oscar back to check on him. Oscar reported he was dead, very definitely dead, but he could not find a scratch on him. No further incidents on return to base. Wing Surgeon Report: Autopsy determined that rear gunner Worley died from a flak wound located behind the lobe of his right ear. The piece of flak was no more than a sliver, thus no blood and a entry wound undetectable to the naked eye. Crew Chief Report: Replace #3 fuel tank, patch a few holes. (4 hits, 40 Peckham Points)
