Picked up a rather persistent Jerry nightfighter in zone 5 outbound. He hit us a number of times, putting a hole in engine 4 oil tank (which fortunatley, self-sealed), rendered inoperable Sgt. Evans mid upper guns and destroyed the heating element for tail gunner Sgt. Simpson's flight suit (resulting in frostbite for Sgt. Simpson - I might add, that Sgt. Simpson insisted at staying at his post and as a result, will probably lose some parts to frostbite).
And, as fate would have it, in the next zone, another Jerry nightfighter approached from the 6 position and was blasted by Sgt. Simpson.
On approach to target, we were hit by flak, but no serious damages occurred. We were not spotlighted nor found by roving night fighters over target and Sgt. Wilson put a nice number of our bombs on target (40%).
Flight home was uneventful until well over the North Sea; Jerry found us and hit port wing root. On his next pass, Sgt. Wilson put a few holes in him, but he continued to annoy us. Eventually, he flew off into the night.
Landed fine dispite horrid weather at base. Sgt. Simpson taken to hospital.
